Mother’s Day in Steveston

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Mother’s Day is on Sunday May 8th. Think local to make her day special. Skip the mall, and make it a uniquely Steveston experience. It can be done, very easily in fact!

Begin the day with every child’s favourite way to show love, with breakfast in bed and a gorgeous bouquet of flowers from Prickly Pear Garden Centre. Another idea is to buy a perennial to pop in the ground to remind mum of your gift each year.

In preparation for your homemade breakfast, head to JS Nature Farms for fresh eggs (located at 11500 McKenzie Rd) and pick up some farm fresh organic eggs with beautiful dark yellow yolks. If you are in a rush and need to do one stop shopping, you can assemble virtually the entire meal at Heringers. Purchase some Rabbit River eggs, Grampas hickory bacon or pork maple sausages, Terra bread, and some preserves and you are almost set. For a cuppa joe that mum is sure to love, head to Steveston Coffee House and bring home their hand roasted organic coffee beans. If tea is mum’s thing, Nikaido is the place to go.

Gift choices abound in Steveston. Jewellery is always a big hit. You are sure to find something to dazzle at Pieces with a great selection of Canadian designers. Check out Howling Dog jewellery, made right here in Steveston. Pyjamas from Bare Basics are a fun gift to accompany breakfast in bed. Serenity has lovely coffee mugs and placemats for the breakfast tray. Choose from a variety of terrific greeting cards at A Monkey Tree.

A gift certificate to a spa is a lovely way to pamper mum, and London Landing is home to two excellent spas. Raintree Wellness Spa and Goegan Spa both offer treatments in soothing environments.

Another fun way to celebrate is to visit London Heritage Farm for their Mother’s Day Tea and plant sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 7 & 8. Reservations are recommended.

Dining out is one of the nicest treats that you can give. Whether it is a casual meal at Pajo’s fish & chips, a burger, yam fries and a shake at Mondo Burger, brunch at Tapenade Bistro, or a meal with a view at the Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant, it is sure to be memorable, and tasty.

Congratulations! You have planned an entire day without having to leave Steveston. To all mums – enjoy your day of adoration, you deserve it!

What is Bliss? Bliss is a boutique jewellery and gift store located in one of the newest, storefront buildings in Steveston. We carry the full Pandora jewellery line, the popular Ice-Watch line as well as a few unique locally made products. Pandora jewellery is an internationally recognized line of jewellery which is always expanding its range of goods.

Why did you decide to open a retail business? Mark took the kids to buy me a charm for my Pandora bracelet for Mother’s Day last year and was amazed at the popularity of Pandora. The following Monday he contacted Pandora Canada and the fun began…

What is your role in the store? I will be managing the day to day operations of the store, working on the floor with our staff, especially during busy times and when we have our Pandora gift with purchase events. Mark will remain behind the scenes but he will be around to help out when necessary.

Who is your family? Mark and I have a 7 year old son and a 5 year old daughter. They love bike rides along the water and around Garry Point and they have spent hundreds of hours at the Steveston Community Center and park.

Do you live in Steveston? Yes we live in Steveston and we love it. When I was pregnant with our first child we lived at Steveston Station. The condo was not big enough for three of us so we started looking for a house around Richmond. We soon realized how much we loved Steveston and we were lucky to find a house in the area.

What is your connection to Steveston? Mark and I both have connections to Steveston. My parents Jack and Jane O’Hare own O’Hare’s Pub and Liquor Store and I had until recently been involved in their business from the day the doors opened almost 24 years ago. Mark is the co-owner of Global Marine Equipment and he deals with many of the marine businesses in Steveston.

What did you do before you started this business? Mark has been a business owner for many years. He has a marine equipment company and he also specializes in computer hardware. I was a financial advisor for many years and decided to switch to an accounting career after having our first child. I mainly work from home which has given me the flexibility to be very involved in my children’s activities. We will both continue with our regular jobs.

What is your favorite thing about Steveston? There is so much about Steveston it’s really hard to pick. We love the water and being so close to it, walking on the wharf with the children on the weekends to see all the fresh seafood, dining at the local restaurants, but most of all we love the close community feeling and our many friends that live close by.
